How to Make a Marble Trivet + Style it 7 Ways
I totally understand how tricky it is at times to source the kinds of decorator items you might find in your home country. I'll be the first to admit I have been tempted more than once to haul large and heavy objects for my house in Jakarta in my luggage; to the sound of loud complaints from my husband and rolled eyes from my teenage daughters.
I searched high and low in Jakarta for a marble board or trivet … the kind I'd admired so many times in stores in Australia and home design magazines; the hexagonal kind. When all manner of searching failed, I decided to try some DIY. Well, actually not DIY in the pure sense, I had some help with the trivet design, thanks engineer husband for that, and I used a reputable marble supplier for the cutting and polishing.
If you think DIY means having things that don't look quite as good as something you would buy in a store, think again. I'm pretty chuffed with my marble trivet result, and I thought you might like to see how it was done.
Let me show you how easy it is to make your own!

But first...
Why I'm a fan of the marble trivet
Its beauty lies in its colour and modern shape
It can be easily repurposed
It's multifunctional: it can be used as a plate, placemat or serving board, perfect to serve breakfast foods on, use as a cheese platter or a cake plate
It can be moved from room to room or you could easily have more than one, in different sizes
It's also great for placing precious or sentimental objects on; I like to use it for displaying candles, small vases and small pottery bowls to place jewellery items in such as my watch
It's ideal to use on your table or bench to protect it from scorching dishes...What's not to LOVE!
How to make a marble trivet
Start by deciding on the size. CLICK for 3 DESIGN sizes. I've used Medium.
Then choose your material. I've used Carrara marble, but you could use local marble or granite quarried in West Java.
Next you will need a piece of felt to glue on the back of the trivet so it doesn't scratch the surface it will sit on. You can find felt at Pasar Mayestik.
Now you are ready to take your design to a marmer (marble) shop. I used Elite Marmer on Jl. Fatmawati. Shop assistant Ening was excellent in her knowledge of the range of stone products.
Your marble trivet should take about one week to make.
Then when you have it home, here are some ways to style your gorgeous new marble trivet...I'm NO expert..I just had fun playing with different objects, using inspiration from my favourite magazines, books and online sites such as Pinterest...it was as simple as that! The sky is the limit, so DON'T HOLD BACK!

Caring for marble
Just be sure to treat your marble with love and be wary of staining, as marble is porous
Anything acidic will corrode marble. Be careful of foods such as vinegar, lemon juice or citrus juices
Wipe with a mild dishwashing detergent and polish with a soft absorbent towel
If you have an accident, you can always return to your marble supplier for a fresh polish
