How to Shake up your Look with Rugs
Every year about this time I get the urge to 'shake up my home furnishing look'. I get swept up in the energy of a new year and I'm inspired to make some changes; in fact it often begins with a hankering to buy a new rug. I'm not one to be deterred by a homeware challenge, so I took to the South Jakarta streets to roundup the best rugs on offer. Below you will find my 'Top Picks'. Let's take a tour...

Cayenne is the quintessential local Indonesian homeware store
Cayenne Home Ms Chevron rug in acrylic. This is an easy care rug. I can see it in a child's bedroom or playroom.
The Cayenne Home showroom is vast, and even if you don't pick up a rug there will be many other local homewares to tempt you.
The Cayenne Home signature recycled plastic mats in a variety of sizes and pastel colours. Great for kids play areas.
Nothing was too much trouble for head of sales Yuyu at Fio HOME when I visited. I had my eye on this vibrant orange floral design, made in India. It was as luxurious underfoot as it was stylish!

Fio HOME sheepskin rug from NZ and a selection of cowhide. If you are interested in getting a sheepskin rug, you might be interested in something like sheepskins nz. The sheepskin is the perfect 'rainy season' rug, don't you think? I'd love one to drape over the back of my favourite chair.

Look up as you are driving along Jl. Cipete Raya for the Kekayuan sign. Coming from Jl. Fatmawati it is on your left. Like Le Souq, Kekayuan stock all Indonesian home wares. Once inside, head upstairs to the Kekayuan gallery.
Kekayuan hand woven rug from Kalimantan with a felt backing. This is a beautifully crafted rug coming from an island renowned for its skilled artisans and craftspeople. This is a timeless piece in soft neutral tones which requires minimal maintenance.

The biggest and oldest dealers of rugs in Indonesia.You can't miss Kinara Art Gallery on Jl. Kemang Raya opposite Indian restaurant of the same name. Prepare yourself for an Aladdin's cave of rugs! Their complete range consists of rugs from almost every rug producing part of the world. If you don't have travel plans to these destinations on your agenda any time soon, my picks are their thick woollen Kilims from Afghanistan and Iran.
And here they are! An extensive selection of colours and designs in thick hand-knotted wool.
The rugs at Kinara Art Gallery definitely have soul and history. The staff is happy to share the origins and history of each rug.
If you are looking for an authentic oriental rug, there is something for everyone here. Don't be afraid to 'turn up' and 'pull' rugs from the towering stacks.Even if you come home empty-handed, the visual and tactile experience will be reward enough.
Le Souq is well renowned as the 'go to' for local interior designs with a very 'now' look. Le Souq store manager Lie will provide you with a very friendly tour of the shop. She says if you are looking for a cowhide from Central Java, it's always good to get in quick as they sell out fast!
If you are looking for something 'a bit edgy' as well as 'local' you can't go past the Le Souq cow hide from Central Java
Le Souq also stock made to measure seagrass carpets from the island of Sumatra, which I think work beautifully in any tropical home.

Have you visited 2Madison on Jl. Bangka Raya? It's a contemporary decorator's haven on two levels. They love colour and collaborations with local artists and crafters who have the same spirit. Head up the stairs to see their rugs!
I like the way 2Madison have styled the neutral cow hide with the bright blue sofa and turquoise lamp. How about you?
Continuing with the modern theme from 2Madison. They have a small range of medium size rugs. This black and white chevron rug would be perfect for a small room or study nook.

Make your way up the stairs to the entrance of Chic Mart, turn left, then up the wooden staircase to Retota Interiors and Accessories. There you find an extensive locally made rug collection.

Retota has a wonderful collection of neutral coloured rugs. Made in Indonesia from serat pisang abaca (banana fibre/husk)
Retota has cleverly transferred their banana fibre concept to a range of rustic wall hangings. These had me nostalgic for my 70's childhood. I like it! Could this wallhanging work at your place?
