Hi.

We’re Liz and Jo! Thanks for joining us at a journey bespoke, our Jakarta-based blog that we started back in 2014 and continued to write until the end of 2019.

Jakarta to Yogyakarta by Train : & The Story of Rice

Jakarta to Yogyakarta by Train : & The Story of Rice

Stasiun-Gambir1.jpg

In todays post I take you on a journey of discovering how rice is grown and harvested in Central Java; with my best attempts to take photos from the window of my train to Yogyakarta, and the help of eight knowledgable Indonesians who captioned all of the photos 'About Rice' and the important features of 'Gambir Station' where my train departed from.

As this is my last personal 'a journey bespoke' post I wanted to share it with you in English and Bahasa Indonesia - the language of my adopted country, and as a tribute to this beautiful land, her people and its rich and vibrant culture.

Liz

Let the Journey Begin ...

After the first 30 minutes of the train trip, the city of Jakarta was no where in sight and the story of rice production in Central Java unfolded before my eyes ...

Along the way I passed lush rice and corn fields, villages with mountains and volcanos rising up in the distance. I marvelled at the terraced hills, the many shades of green and the back breaking work of the rice farmers.

With a population of more than 140 million, the fertile island of Java is the most densely populated island on earth and its extensive railway system is the perfect way to soak up the scenery and savour the beauty of Indonesia.

Java is the main rice producing island, in particular, Central Java. Central Java is surrounded by volcanic mountains and abundant water sources, which makes it a fertile agriculture land particularly for Indonesia’s staple food … rice. Indonesia is the world’s third largest rice grower.

Saya benar!

'Gambir Station is a station that is probably the oldest station in Jakarta, but for me personally this station was very memorable around the 80s, because at that time I lived in my uncle's house in Surabaya, and twice a year I commuted Jakarta-Surabaya and Surabaya-Jakarta through this station. What I remember about the station is that this station is not so big but unique, with good food and drink stalls lined up inside, including the unique platforms'.
